The civilized person is judged by how well he responds to the needs of the less-fortunate. Three percent of the world population is mentally challenged. In developing countries this figure is even higher owing to malnutrition during pregnancy. These children while residing with their families are rendered dysfunctional, because
- Family members have a normal model for perfect child
- Parents are not trained, and, hence, are affected emotionally

At Navjivini, we have adopted a two dimensional approach:

i) Rehabilitation of children
ii) Community sensitization and participation.

Alongside, Navjivini envisioned Sadhu Basant Residential care

www.sadhubasant.org an institution aimed at providing permanent residential facilities for persons with mild/moderate mental handicap. Navjivini Society for Mental Health (Regd.) was founded in 1981 to create services for training and development of mentally handicapped children. The Navjivini school of special education, promoted by the society had a humble beginning in 1982. Presently it has an elaborate infrastructure, supported primarily by voluntary donations.
The school has employed professional staff dedicated to caring for the mentally challenged. Navjivini has 127 children on its rolls, out of these 43 are in the boarding house.
The school is being managed as per the guidelines of
National Institute for Mentally Handicapped : www.nimhindia.org and Rehabilitation Council of India : www.rehabcouncil.nic.in. The school possesses modern and meticulously maintained facilities and teaching aids.
